Gabby Douglas’ “Olympic Hair” Cause a Stir on Social Media

Gymnast Gabby Douglas’ hair seem to be a bigger topic than her athleticism.

It’s amazing to see so many people’s concern with Gabby’s edges.

In 2012, she was the first African American to earn an individual, all-around Olympic title, and during this year’s Rio Olympics she took home another gold medal. The gymnast now has 3 gold medals and 2 Olympic runs under her belt. However, negative comments about her hair have managed to outshine her accomplishments. Are we as a community so superficial that we feel justified dragging this young woman on social media because her hair isn’t how we think it should be?

After all, this is hair we are talking about. The people spewing the negative comments more than likely haven’t even accomplished nearly as much as Gabby has, yet they find time to discuss the state of her hair?

On top of the annoying hair ordeal, Gabby is also being put under fire for not putting her hand over her heart to salute the U.S. flag during the National Anthem. Can Gabby get a break? Geesh.

The girl is out here doing amazing things, literally making history, yet we want to be petty.

Furthermore, a person of color choosing not to salute the American flag, should not be frowned upon, have you watched the news lately? Have you been in society for over the last 100+ years? America is historically known for giving the black community it's back, why should we pledge to its flag? However, Gabby reportedly said she was simply “overwhelmed” when asked why she did not salute the flag. Either way, can we just let Gabby live? She’s out here representing strong for young girls, and it seem so many are set on dimming her light. Shine on Gabby, shine on.
