Bill Maher is a prime example of how careless white America is when it comes to this country’s history of racism and bigotry.

It’s so interesting how white America can’t seem to understand that it is never cool for them to use the word “nigger”, or any variations of it. The history of the word is covered in whips, chains, tears, blood, and brutality. The fact that people so casually try to use the word says a lot about the mentality of us as people.

As with most things, the black community is notorious for turning lemons into lemonade. Taking “nigger” and turning it into a term of endearment by making it “nigga”, is a symbol of resilience to some, and a sign of ignorance to others. The black community will probably forever be divided when it comes to whether we should actively use the word or not. However, we have all pretty much agreed that it is a word that should not be spoken out of the mouth of anyone outside of the community, and white people just keep missing the memo.

Bill Maher may not even consciously be a racist. A lot of white America are racist byway of tradition, but that doesn’t excuse the fact that he said something that was ignorantly insensitive. Maher knew better, but perhaps, he just didn’t care?

“Friday nights are always my worst nights of sleep because I’m up reflecting on the things I should or shouldn't have said on my live show. Last night was a particularly long night as I regret the word I used in the banter of a live moment. The word was offensive and I regret saying it and I'm very sorry,” Maher said in an apology issued after the incident.

Are apologies even worth anything when it comes to n-word usage? Does he actually  regret what he said, or is he regretting the backlash received for saying it?

Ice Cube came on Bill Maher’s Real Time show and gave his thoughts on using the word, and Maher didn’t seem that receptive.
