Last night (Aug. 22), BET’s Black Girls Rock! aired. The awards ceremony was established in 2006 by Beverly Bonds. The Black Girls Rock! Awards is a celebration of black women and girls who are leading, overcoming obstacles, shining their light, and breaking barriers.

This year’s award show was everything. Black Girls Rock! provides a platform for black girl magic to truly prosper. We get to see successful, intelligent, and beautiful women and girls who reflect us in the public eye.

Issa Rae, Solange, Maxine Waters, and Yara Shahidi were honored among others for their courage to just be themselves, especially while in the positions they are each in. Being a black girl or woman isn’t always the easiest thing within a world that has made us feel less beautiful and less capable. However, platforms such as Black Girls Rock! puts us under new light, light that is most true to who we are and what we have to offer.

We create our own platforms, spaces, and programs. We don’t need to beg for a seat at any time that does not want us. We build our own tables, chairs, and center pieces. Black girl magic is a very real thing. In the words of Solange, “Black girls are the most poppin’”.

Representation is key and Black Girls Rock! represented perfectly. If you missed last night’s episode, you can catch it again tonight on BET.

Thank you Beverly Bonds.
