Jay Z penned an open letter in TIME about the injustice that goes on within the criminal justice system.

In the letter Jay Z writes, “If you're from neighborhoods like the Brooklyn one I grew up in, if you're unable to afford a private attorney, then you can be disappeared into our jail system simply because you can't afford bail. Millions of people are separated from their families for months at a time — not because they are convicted of committing a crime, but because they are accused of committing a crime.”

After producing the Time: The Kalief Browder Story docuseries, Jay Z became interested in the bail bond industry. “On any given day, over 400,000 people, convicted of no crime, are held in jail because they cannot afford to buy their freedom”, he goes on to write.

The Brooklyn rapper and business mogul has decided to act. Following in the steps of organizations who came together to bail 100 mothers out for Mother’s Day, Jay Z will be doing something special for Father’s Day. In honor of the day, he will be partnering up with Southerners on New Ground and Color of Change to bail out fathers.

Jay Z ended the letter with, “As a father with a growing family, it's the least I can do, but philanthropy is not a long fix, we have to get rid of these inhumane practices altogether. We can't fix our broken criminal justice system until we take on the exploitative bail industry.”

It’s good to see that Jay Z isn’t so far removed from the realities of this world. This move is definitely a boss move. On top of that, Jay Z recently made history by being the first rapper inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Props to Jay.
