The Queen of Katwe: A Story of Life, Chess, and One Extraordinary Girl's Dream of Becoming a Grandmaster is a book that was  written by Tim Crothers in 2012. The book has since been turned into a film courtesy of Disney.

Disney will be releasing The Queen of Katwe in theaters this week and we have 3 reasons why you should go out and watch it.

  1. Luptia Nyong’o plays a major role in the movie.

Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o, the beautiful and talented actress who amazed us all in the movie 12 Years a Slave, will be starring in The Queen of Katwe as the mother of Phiona Mutesi, the main character. Lupita has yet to let us down with her stellar performances and movie roles, so it should be a great experience to watch her in this new role.

  1. Black representation.

Disney is giving us a real African story, if this isn’t a good enough reason to go see The Queen of Katwe what is? The African American community is finally being acknowledged and represented on major platforms such as Disney. Our children watch these mainstream shows and movies but rarely get to see people who look like them actually in them, so perhaps this could be a turning point for Disney, and hopefully this will trigger more movies and tv shows being produced with people of color represented in the cast.

  1. Great storyline.

The story for the film is based off a real life story. The Queen of Katwe tells the story of Phiona Mutesi, a young girl from Uganda who becomes the chess champion of her country and an international chess master.  It’s an inspiring story with an amazing storyline based off true events, and who doesn’t love a good real life story about overcoming obstacles and coming out on top?

The Queen of Katwe movie will hit select theaters on September 23rd and will be released everywhere September 30th.
